ROSSETTI Dante Gabriel Salutation of Beatrice 1880-82

Oil on canvas, 1,543 mm (60.75 in). x 914 mm (35.98 in). Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio

Rossetti was inspired by Vita Nuova, a book by Dante Alighieri where he tells about his love for Beatrice. In the background Dante himself, comforted by the red-robed figure of Love.
My lady looks so gentle and so pure / When yielding salutation by the way / That the tongue trembles and has naught to say / And the eyes, which fain would see, may not endure. – From Vita Nuova by Dante Alighieri
