The painting depicts Ophelia, a character from Shakespeare's play Hamlet, singing while floating in a river just before she drowns:

I sent my soul through the invisible
Some letter of that afterlife to spell
And by and by my soul returned to me
And answered, "I Myself am Heaven and Hell"

Roslin’s wife, French portrait artist Marie Suzanne Giroust. There were numerous ways of holding, opening and closing fans. Each way meant something specific. The lady with the veil has folded her fan and is using it to stroke her cheek. This might mean: I love you! – Google Art Project

The couple engrossed in one another is surrounded by natural setting, a garden of a mystic atmosphere. The flowers unfolding from the rampant vegetation and the swirling ribbon of smoke at the right suggest roses and the fragrance of incense. Google Art Project

Le Chahut
Oil on canvas.
Height: 1,700 mm (66.93 in). Width: 1,410 mm (55.51 in).
Kröller-Müller Museum Otterlo, Netherlands

Like the Impressionists, Seurat was fascinated by light and colour. But he found Impressionist art too emotional. As a reaction to this he developed a painting technique that displays none of the painter’s personality. He used only seven colours, which he applied in small dabs so close to one another that the eye blends them into forms and subtle tints. This Neo-Impressionist manner of painting is called pointillism, from the French word ‘point’ which means ‘dab’. Google Art Project

The earth, the sky, the rocks, the trees, the men and women of Burne-Jones are not those of this world; but they are themselves a world, consistent with itself, and having therefore its own reality. – Wikipedia

Den blinde mannen

Inga kommentarer:

A thousand dreams within me softly burn

Inga kommentarer:
Målningen är gjord av Henri Fantin-Latour, The corner of the table, 1872.

Lyskatt

Inga kommentarer:
